Graduate level studio that examined the study of sound as an organizing method of site planning.
This design response endeavored to unify the existing Boy’s Ranch in Lubbock, TX in order to form a more cohesive environment for at risk youth in the foster system. The 5 mile site was organized through different paths of movement, points of engagement, and planes of community gathering.
Texas Boy’s Ranch is an independent, non-profit, basic childcare facility, a foster care and adoption agency and a children’s shelter. The Ranch serves children 3 through 18-years-old without regard to race, religion, or national origin. Each child is provided with training in social skills, personal finance, health and safety, home economics, and community service.
There are four on-campus cottages with a structured, stable family environment. The houseparents. The children at the Ranch have the unique experience of living on a 460-acre working ranch. They help with ranch animals, maintain campus grounds, mow lawns, etc. The ranch provides comprehensive therapeutic counseling for children, as well as their families with a strong emphasis on spiritual growth.
Children attend church, take part in cottage devotionals, and participate in campus-wide activities provided by the Education/ Recreation/ Spiritual Development Coordinator. Funding for our children is provided by corporate, church, foundation, civic organizations and individual donations, along with per diem reimbursement for child care.
